“Dark Ages” When you go back and think about the Early Medieval Period what do you think about? Most people would talk about the “Dark Ages”. Well this is something that historians have been researching for years and have come up with some reasons for this time period’s “darkness”. The Early Medieval Period has been called Dark throughout history but for what reasons. The factors behind the "Darkness" is the belief that the people of this time were ruled by the Catholic church, such as if a dictator were in power at the time, the lack of literature and ability to write, and the lack of historical records of the time period have plague this time into darkness.
Probably one of the most influential roles in this negative era was the rule and uprising of the Catholic Church in the government. The Catholic Church was the ruler of this period in time, in that the people had no real knowledge so they looked to the church for all their answers. After the plague especially people looked for the church for guidance and support. But this backfired and because a bad cycle of lies and conspiracy. As so many people depended upon the church for answers to greater questions it started to gain huge amounts of power and dictated the citizens. The Church started to rule the people so greatly that they soon had powers as too where they could execute people for things unexplained by greater knowledge. Literature and entertainment were also limited by the church and most authors and artists were religious and governmental figures.
As stated before literature and entertainment weren’t the hit of the era. This caused life to be very boring for people to live. It’s really not the fact that there was a lack of literature of the time, the real issue was that few select people knew how to read and write meaning the average citizen was illiterate. Once again this is a fact of greater knowledge being so scarce, is where dark may actually come in. Dark is metaphorical for lack "light" and this light being Knowledge of the world. The English and Celtics had art to tell their stories rather than much literature.
Although the ruling of the Catholic Church and dormant literature are major roles in this metaphorical “darkness”, there is one other giant factor to consider. That factor was the fact that historians today couldn’t dig up to many records of the time period giving them little historical proof to work with. Up to this day many Historians still don't have records and proof of things that happened during this period of time making it "Dark" almost in a sense of not knowing what went on during this period in time. The Italian scientist who named it the "Dark Ages," actually stated that there is so much not known about this period that it is considered a bit dark, lacking our light of knowledge about the time. A great example of this is how we have no idea as to how the “Stonehenge” and other formations have gotten where they are today. It’s almost like trying to crack an unsolvable mystery.
In conclusion my understanding of how this period became known as Dark is because of the lack of greater knowledge at the time and our lack of greater knowledge, making the metaphorical meaning of the word "Dark" or letting in no light, knowledge. So when you are thinking about how the Early Medieval Period got it’s label as the “Dark Ages”. Read this over again and you’ll understand the reasoning of this name.
